Dorothy E. Ashley, 88, of Council Grove, formerly of Wilsey, KS, passed away Wednesday, November 7, 2012, at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.
She was born September 6, 1924 to Roger and Edith (Illk) Tompkins in Wilsey. She graduated Wilsey Rural High School in 1942.
Dorothy married Guy Horton on March 31, 1944, they were later divorced. They had three daughters, Nancy Jo, Donna Lou and Marla Jean. She remarried Carl Ashley on August 18, 1972. He preceded her in death in 1994.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church of Wilsey, a 50 year member of Eastern Star, Hill Springs Hobby Club and a long time 4-H Leader.
Dorothy taught school at South Bend, Hill Springs and Wilsey Grade Schools. She was an Avon Representative for many years, co-owner of the Saddlerock Café from 1964 to 1977 and was also a cashier at Council Grove IGA.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing and Jayhawk basketball! She dearly loved time spent with her family and visiting with friends.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband Carl, brother Curtis Tompkins, daughter Donna Lou Peavey and son-in-law Lee Winterbower.
Survivors include her daughters Nancy Jo Winterbower, of Council Grove and Marla Gordon and husband Dan, of N. Newton; grandchildren Lori Stuart, Tom Winterbower, Kasey Newell, Danna Gordon, Shawn Horton and Jason Horton; 5 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday, November 9th at Penwell-Gabel Flint Hills Chapel. Burial will follow at Wilsey Cemetery.
